A Mockingbird sang while I was out in the yard between rain showers. I didn't get a good picture, I would have scared him off if I moved, but the song was awesome, in spite of background noise.

Sorry about those barking dogs. The birds are only active during morning hours and apparently so were the neighbors' dogs today. I didn't realize how annoying they really were until I listened to the clip on Youtube, myself.

My wife and I drove down to the river again today, I have been curious to see how much it has risen since last weekend. We went a bit further down stream today, to the Tom Lee park. The park, not really a park yet, is an open stretch between the city and the river. Newly planted trees will probably transform it into a park within the next ten years. I had the luck to see two of the old steamboats struggling with the strong current, their progress was almost undetectable.

I realized that this place deserves better weather for picture taking, it is gloomy and overcast today and really, really chilly again.
I never stopped to look at the "sky line" or city from this angle before, it doesn't look bad at all. But i need to come back when the sun is shining.

The park got its name to honor this black man, who in 1925 while risking his own life saved many of the passengers on a steam boat that capsized on the river. The statue depicts him saving a man from drowning. One must remember this was in 1925; the passengers on that ship were white, upper class families, he, on the other hand was, let us say, underprivileged... He saw beyond all prejudice and bigotry and saw fellow human beings in distress. Or, and this is a heart breaking thought, had he all his life been taught to regard his own life as less worthy than the passengers' lives on that sinking boat?

They have chosen the location well for the statue. I can imagine the panic being swept away by the strong current after a shipwreck.

Out near the tree a bit left of center in the image is where I was standing last week taking pictures.
The water might rise further before it is over. But this is by no means a disaster on the Tennessee side, it is far worse on the other side, where huge areas are under water.

From the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, today.

What started as a bit of a crazy idea has become an attraction.
People from all over the world comes to Kiruna by air, are transported in a sleigh pulled by reindeer from the airport to this hotel in the middle of nowhere high above the arctic circle. They will pay handsomely to spend a night or more in a hotel built every year from ice and nothing else.
Judging from the cold impression this image gives, the hotel will stay in business a few more weeks, before it all melts down.

The wooden structures are for the staff, they are not part of the actual hotel.

If you click on the picture you will be forwarded to a live image.

I took a few pictures on my way to the Mississippi River the other day

This is a common sight downtown and has been so for the last 10 years. The city is going through a big renewal.
I still get an uneasy feeling while driving in this part of the town, only a stone's throw to the north are neighborhoods that have been neglected for decades and I definitely feel like an intruder while driving there. Not this street, though, it is Poplar Avenue. But the side streets to the north feel like a foreign zone.

I'm adding this photo for my Swedish visitors

The sign tells that Skanska is the entrepreneur. It used to be a modest business in southern Sweden, making sewage pipes and similar from concrete. Back then its name was "Skånska Cementguteriet".
It was transformed to a construction business in the early 60-s and dropped the ring over the letter "a", when it went international. My wife can't make the sound, which that å letter stands for, to her frustration. It sounds similar to the vowel in "pork", but not quite :) I don't think she believes me..

But, of course, we are pleased that the downtown area is coming back to life. The inner city is not bad at all, lots of restaurants and public places within walking distance. And I like the modest "Skyline".

This is one ugly house.
It stands by itself on a huge, otherwise empty, lot, almost in downtown. What its purpose might be is a riddle to me. It has something of Norman Bates / Psycho about it.

Down by the Riverside again

Crossing the bridge over Wolf River on our way to Harbor Town.

I wanted to go down to the river today. I was curious to see how much it had risen since the last time I was down there. My wife was driving as usual, she seems to enjoy my little excursions, too. If not, it is an act of love on her party. I enjoy her company, anyway

The water is high, alright. I'd say this far it is about ten feet higher than last time, maybe even twelve. The trees, that normally stand some fifteen feet away from the river are standing way out in water now.

A seagull picking whatever edibles, that the river had left on the new shore.

Another foot higher and the water will cover the whole field where I was standing, taking this image. Then it will really look impressive. All neighborhoods down here are standing on much higher grounds and they are not likely to be flooded even if the river decides to throw its worst at Memphis. But the levees on the Arkansas side are lower and they are probably in for a huge and lasting flooding within the next few days.

A little bit further downstream I saw this hardy couple defy the chilly winds and the strong current. I can understand the thrill in getting that close to the elements. They seemed to know what they were doing.

One last picture. If you click on it, you can see a short movie clip from the river. The wind blew into the microphone and I had a hard time keeping it focused, for some reason.

The sparrows are moving in.

From the bathroom window

This far three out of four birdhouses seem to be occupied

Just common sparrow, but it's a friendly little bird
