Nov 11, 2007 3:47pm: New houses in the very southern parts of Downtown, Memphis.

Nov 10, 2007 1:30pm: Today's excursion took place with my better half behind the wheel
and the target was South downtown.
The once impressive railway station
has not much more left than the front
facing Main Street

Of the tracks, where once, a long time ago,
crowds were waiting for Elvis Presley to exit his train,
home from Germany and military service,
only the solid stoppers remain as a monument, perhaps.
Two tracks remain on the west side of the station,
you can ride the train to Chicago and New Orleans
a couple of times a week, but few citizens
are even aware that you actually still can.

The ticket office was closed today,
all that reminds of better times are the pews,
they still look like what you expect in a railway station.
No crowds, though, very, very quiet

This is as far South as the street cars go.
Big money has been invested in downtown
during the last ten, fifteen years.
The downtown area is slowly but steadily coming back to life.
Instead of tearing down old warehouses
from the peak of the cotton business era,
the buildings are being transformed into modern apartment buildings.
But still the streets are quiet enough
to make it possible to stand in the middle of the street
and take pictures without being run over by cars.

The railway track runs close to the river,
dividing the riverfront from downtown.
Between the tracks and the riverside are new,
high end neighborhoods with a very nice view over the river
