A trip along roads in the northwestern outskirts of Memphis

We didn't go there, we simply couldn't find it.

Large areas under water after the heavy rain last Friday. But this part has been soaked for years, probably a new dam somewhere, these tree stumps are old.

This derelict bridge leads my thoughts to one of Stephen King's novels.

The same bridge from the present road.

Many creeks are filled with fast running water.

I was going to call this an abandoned house until I noticed the satellite dish on the roof.

This one is abandoned, for sure. It looks almost beautiful sitting there in the middle of the field.

The function of this construction escapes me.

Almost back in the city

A small side street, just outside downtown Memphis

A huge ugly billboard sign seemingly on top of the house at the end of the street.

I never heard of this burger before.

Finally back in city with yet another not flattering view from Sun Records, I believe it is an early photo of Jerry Lee Lewis next to "the King".

The day we all dread was here, time to get the car inspected, spending an hour fretting why I always choose the slowest lane out of three..

There were almost constant thunderstorms from early afternoon until 3 Saturday morning.
The skies looked both intimidating and beautiful.

I turned the page in my Swedish calendar today.

Perhaps too sweet a picture it is nevertheless catching the very, very fresh green grass and foliage in my stomping grounds and I lose myself in the picture for a moment.
The author of Pippi Longstocking and other books for children grew up here in these surroundings.
She depicts a Sweden that is gone forever, even if you still can find places like the one above.

All right, I can't help it, she's a beauty.

I hesitated to demonstrate my affection, she was a dream when I was 18 years old and saw her in magazines,
in that far country "over there", where all the cool stuff came from.
I stood in the very front of the bow, just like that famous scene from "Titanic" when we passed the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and saw her in the distance not very tall from my perspective. We went way south of her on our way to a dock in Newark. I have a faded photo somewhere, it's probably in the attic of my parents house, together with all the other souvenirs I was tricked to purchase from smart salesmen on Broadway.
I did not bring home a camphor wood shrine. That was otherwise the ultimate sign that you were grownup and had taken a job on a ship in order to see the world and tell tall tales to your buddies back home, the ones who hadn't showed the boldness to leave the comfort of home for a few months or perhaps just weeks on a ship crossing the Atlantic ocean...

I had never been farther from home than Gothenburg previous to my adventure. I had to spend a night at the sailors' hotel before it was my turn to get a job on a ship and I felt terribly lonesome and lost, which didn't pass unnoticed by the seasoned sailors whom I shared a three bed room with..They had seen it before, I'm sure. I got my assignment anyway and over the next weeks I learned a few new things about life.
I went ashore in Bremerhaven in Germany and went straight to the nearest liquor store and bought a handsome amount of refreshments. I was a grownup!
My mother was home praying for me, my guardian angel was definitely there the whole time.
It was an adventure, nothing serious happened, but I still have vivid memories from that time.
A stocky, grumpy engineer, he was from East Germany, was watching a couple of guys from our crew painting the stern of our ship in Baltimore, Maryland. He leaned over the railing to see better, lost his balance and fell into the murky water in the harbor, quite a dive..I remember him standing on the pier after his rescue, shivering from cold, with the same grumpy face, legs wide apart like a true sailor, soaked from top to bottom.
Yes, it was fun...

The bamboo is amazing.
I checked the flowerbed last Thursday, no new bamboo in sight, this morning some of the sprouts were 2 feet tall or more.
It is an uphill battle, fortunately it's easy to cut them off while they are still fresh.

All right, it's empty, I'll be planting next weekend..

This how the bamboo spreads, long roots some 7 inches below surface building a network that sends up new stalks everywhere. These are from only one season, there was nothing there last summer.

A mourning dove has built her nest in a bush next to our house. I managed to lower a small web cam close to her, perhaps too close, I can only see her head. She has two small white eggs.

Just home from a long, fun weekend in New York.
Thank you all of you who have visited my blog the last few days!

I wish I could have spent more time in the great Central Park. The contrast between the intense spring green foliage and the old high rises showing behind the trees creates an almost surreal impression.

I have been told that the lower building with a flag on top is where John Lennon was killed.

I came here as a very young man in 1964, on a ship like this one. The bridge in the background was under construction, Louis Armstrong sang "Hello Dolly" and the Beatles fever was peaking. And Cassius Clay, was in the news. I don't remember if he already was the new Champion or if he was about to become one.

And it read "PanAm" on the building that says "MetLife" now. What happened to PanAm?
It didn't take an hour or more standing in line to get to the top of the Empire State Building 44 years ago.

I came a long way to get a picture of a seagull.. We took the ferry over to Staten Island, a nice trip and it was free,(!) not a common thing in this city.

An old church in downtown Newark

Trees grow wherever there is space; the left tower in the above picture.

East side 84th and 4th Ave. I came to like cabs very much after one day of walking!

Memphis Light Gas and Water cleared trees next to the power lines earlier this year. They saved the squirrels' nest, but it was exposed to wind and weather and came down during a storm.
The squirrels moved to a water oak in our backyard. The nest doesn't look all that great, just a pile of sticks and straw, but they have produced a new generation nevertheless.
We like our squirrels, I know many regard them as a pest, but they are entertaining to us.

This is the mother, I found that out today.

One of the fairly newborn approaching the mother in a determined way.

He won't take no for an answer.

Enjoying lunch.
